Creativity is alive in the Boston Public Schools. Come take a look! BPS students have access to a wide range of arts opportunities, both in schools and through our arts partners. Together, arts teachers and community artists help Boston youth to think creatively and critically, discover possibilities, and express ideas. The BPS Visual & Performing Arts Department supports this work through district-wide resources, BPS Arts Expansion, and a host of partner programs.
Boston Public Schools Poetry Contest 2024
April is National Poetry Month!
April is National Poetry Month!
Boston Public Schools, Franklin Park Zoo, and World Unity Inc. have partnered together to launch a poetry contest with the theme, “The Importance of Diversity for a Strong Healthy World for Humans, Animals and Nature.” The genesis for the idea comes from the Sun Poem, which has an extraordinary history with Boston. In 1985, it was the centerpiece of a citywide multi-media public service campaign promoting racial and ethnic harmony throughout the city. The poem continues to resonate and inspire today.
The contest application is now open and will close on April 30th, 2024, and all BPS students across all grades are invited to participate! A diverse panel of judges comprised of partners and members of the Boston community will evaluate submissions on the following criteria: Poem submissions must…
Please keep poems no shorter than 4 lines, and no longer than 12 lines. Any submissions falling outside of these guidelines will be disqualified.
Three winning poems — one elementary, one middle school, and one high school — will be selected and announced by the end of May. The winning poems and the Sun Poem will be prominently displayed in the gardens of the Franklin Park Zoo. The three winning poem winners will win a family membership to the Franklin Park Zoo.

Middle school students (entering grades 6 - 8 in the Fall of 2024) experience a weeklong immersion in musical, visual, and theater arts with instruction from BPS educators and local artists from the Greater Boston community. In addition, students take special trips to Symphony Hall in Boston and Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home in the Berkshires, to visit the renowned Tanglewood Music Center.
The Arts Advantage: Impacts of Arts Education on Boston Students
Released in May 2021, this research study highlights the role that increased access to arts education has on student engagement as measured by reductions in absenteeism; increases in parent engagement; and the strengthening of school climate. Read the report here.
"The arts are not just a nice thing to have or to do if there is free time or if one can afford it. Rather, paintings and poetry, music and fashion, design and dialogue, they all define who we are as a people and provide an account of our history for the next generation."
